Evangelism Leader's Training

The Bible clearly mandates, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.“ Our Discipleship Ministries in Nashville boldly states, “Evangelism, no ministry in the church is more vital.” Yet in our local churches, evangelism is a scary word and its intentional application into the life of the church is rarely found. The following training proposal will engage this reality with theology, doctrine, and practical application that will influence the local church and its community in disciple-making for Jesus Christ.

The WPA Conference Evangelism Team will implement a training opportunity for each of our 10 districts that will identify individuals who are interested in beginning (or renewing) and leading an evangelism team in their local church. They will participate in a two-week online classroom teaching experience on evangelism. The online class will culminate with a one-day onsite gathering in their district that will equip the evangelism servant with all the tools and practical resources to recruit, train, lead and facilitate an effective evangelism team in his/her local church. AFCOC will follow-up, as requested, with professional leadership coaching for the evangelism servant-leader.

Details

· The training program will be offered in all 10 districts as a district-wide opportunity and capitalize on proximity and association for support and encouragement.

· The online classroom portion is two weeks long with 10 online contact hours. The text is “Transforming Evangelism: The Wesleyan Way of Sharing Faith” (Knight & Powe).  It is an approved textbook for Lay Servant Ministry. www.beadisciple.com will host the class taught by John Zimmerman.  As a side benefit, successful completion of the class will serve the learner as an advanced course that is required to renew recognition as a Certified Lay Servant, Certified Lay Speaker, or Certified Lay Minister. Clergy would also be able to receive CEU credit and perhaps access their quadrennial continuing ed allotment.

· The on-sight one-day gathering will be held immediately following the class. It will be a full day of practical training held at locations within the 10 districts facilitated by AFCOC.

· The training program will have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 participants from a District (or two Districts if collaborating). All registered will participate in the same online class and gather at the same on-sight training day.

· The online class will focus on theology and doctrine of evangelism within a co-learner environment. The on-sight one-day gathering will focus on practical application to begin or renew an effective evangelism team in the local church. The follow-up coaching will be offered on an as-need basis and will be through online conferencing. It can be individual or team coaching. AFCOC is trained by an ICF-accredited trainer.

Target: Lay/clergy in local churches passionate about evangelism/outreach. Local evangelism chairs (or potential Local Church Evangelism Chairs) would be a key segment of the target audience. This program would be part of a larger effort to restart/re-energize Evangelism Committees in our local churches. Lay speakers/servants/ministers would especially be part of the target audience.
